The Network for Civil Society Organizations (NeCSOs) recently spearheaded a significant initiative aimed at enhancing civic and political engagement within the counties of Western Equatoria State. The sensitization campaign, which commenced on November 8, 2024, in Yambio, focused on critical issues such as the permanent constitution-making process, electoral procedures, and the vital importance of civic rights and accountability. This initiative aimed to educate and empower communities regarding their roles and responsibilities within the political framework of the state.
Collaboration with various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) across Ibba, Nagero, Mundri East, Mundri West, Maridi, Ezo, Mvolo, and Nzara counties ensured a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the sensitization efforts. Remarkably, over 20,000 individuals, including local leaders, women, youth, religious figures, and other stakeholders, participated in these sessions. Such widespread engagement underscores the community’s enthusiasm and the critical need for dialogue surrounding governance and civic participation.
However, it is important to note that the planned sensitization activities in Tambura County were hindered by ongoing security crises, which is
highlighting the complex and often precarious environment in which these civil society organizations operate.
This circumstance serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by civil society actors in conflict-affected regions and the necessity for continued support & intervention.
The initiative received commendations from key stakeholders, including the Paramount Chief, County Commissioner, and Women Representative, who expressed appreciation for NeCSOs’ dedication to fostering civic and political awareness. They underscored the importance of extending these sensitization efforts to all areas, particularly the remaining Payams within the counties, to ensure that no community is left uninformed about their rights and responsibilities.
In conclusion, the sensitization campaign led by NeCSOs represents a vital step toward strengthening civil society and promoting democratic engagement in Western Equatoria State. By facilitating informed discussions on constitution-making and electoral processes, NeCSOs not only empower individuals but also lay the groundwork for a more participatory and accountable governance system. The call for expanded outreach reflects a commitment to inclusivity and a recognition of the diverse voices that constitute the fabric of society.
